1994-1997: Dr. Kim Schulz

Kim and I met in a coffee shop in Iowa City and we started talking so quickly that she never got to order any coffee!!  It was so great to catch up with her. . .

Kim and her then husband Dr. Britt Marcussen were residents in the program from 1994-1997.  While Kim really appreciates her underlying primary care knowledge, she knew family medicine wasn’t the right fit for her even when she was in residency.  She actually started a dermatology residency in Iowa City within a week of finishing her residency in La Crosse!  Kim finds derm, and especially surgery, as a really good fit for her.  She likes lasers and cosmetic surgery and is changing lives by helping people with issues that are affecting their self-worth.  She has taught residents, medical students, done free clinic work, traveled around the US teaching and training, and now owns her business in Coralville, Iowa, called Infinity Skin Care.  Kim is a national pioneer in cosmetic dermatology and a much sought after consultant.

Kim has been through a lot but has an amazing perspective of taking each day one day at a time and being the best she can be.  She has lost her dad at an early age, has lost 2 brothers, and her mom has had cancer.  Kim, herself, is a 2- time cancer survivor and has been through multiple surgeries, chemotherapies, and medication treatment but kept on plugging at work through some pretty gruesome side effects, especially with her second cancer battle.  Learning to live in the moment and “just do it” are life lessons she shared with me.

Kim and Britt’s daughter, Kami, was born in December 1996 when they had 6 months left to complete their residency.  Dr. Stephanie (Shulte) Sworski, her classmate and I delivered the baby!  Kami has chosen a very interesting career as a world class equestrienne who lives in Florida (because that is where world class equestrienne’s live).  She travels around the world with horses, competing and training and caring for horses.  Unfortunately, she was recently diagnosed with thyroid cancer and has been back to Iowa City a few times to deal with that.  Their son, Jonah, is a great cook and has a passion for the culinary world, he also is a skateboarder and loves the active life.
